| I had thought that this company, skinnybytes.com, was actually offering a power over ethernet enabled computer, something that I think should be available by now. And by PoE enabled I mean with the necessary power splitting circuitry on the inside, behind an RJ45 or similar port. I was wrong. They are just selling re-branded Shuttle and Asus computers with an external power splitter. I wish I had not suggested these to a client for a point of sale system. So embarrassing. | | |
| Normally I do not mention many people, but in this case I think it is warranted. Christa Brelsford lived next to me for two years while at Columbia University. She was the one that suggested we live together the second year, and found Alex and Betsy to make four. We mostly joke about grad school and rock climbing now, but it is hard when something bad happens to a friend. Christa was in Haiti during the earthquake and her leg was crushed in a building collapse. Her leg was later amputated in Miami below the knee. Her climbing friends have set up a website with more details at keepchristaclimbing.org. Watch Christa in news interviews; it is inspirational watching someone deal with life so well, and with a smile. | | |

If this thing didn't come with Windows, I don't think I would have paid for anything. Open Source software developers are great!

| So I tried to get stamps from a TD Bank ATM. It spit out a "Cannot complete transaction" type message on the receipt, which I threw away before finding out that they charged me anyway for not producing the stamps. I went back the next day to see if the bank staff could give me the stamps or my money back. They could not as they are "not responsible" for the ATMs in their bank. They asked me if I wanted to try their other ATM. I stayed calm and told them I did not since the first one did not work, and I was unwilling to lose any further funds to their machines. I don't think I will be visiting any TD Banks in the future.

| I've been interviewing for new jobs, and one question that always comes up is: What is your dream job? I am always honest and answer that I would like to be working in digital circuit design either on FPGAs, ASIC, or custom layout. This inevitably leads to the company feeling that I am "overqualified" or "not the right fit" since I haven't interviewed with companies that do integrated circuits. I have even tried come up with new dream jobs: forward for the new Philadelphia major league soccer team, or rhythm guitarist for Vampire Weekend. These I feel are really dreams. I now have an even better one: Newspaper Sex Columnist or participant in psychology research relating to sex. I feel these are great ideas because you get paid for sex, but not in a prostitution or pornography sort of way. Unless you are really creative, which I am not, you would need to do research to be a columnist. For a research participant, they most likely wouldn't want you if you weren't doing something in bed.
